"While designers everywhere transform precious metals and gems into their own unique interpretations of beauty, that's not enough for Lata K. Her pieces need to be multifunctional as well as beautiful, making her work prized by collectors for more than the usual aesthetic reasons. This added component to the design process makes the job of creating new designs especially challenging, something that Lata embraces enthusiastically. To her this process is the art of creating possibilities, and her "transformable" collections illustrate just how well she has succeeded.
The Chameleon collection of circles and squares is ingeniously crafted so that it can be transformed and worn as a brooch, a choker, separately, concentrically or vertically. The Whimsy flower blooms in an endless variety of colors and textures as a flower ring; it also converts into a ring and pendant or bracelet to be worn simultaneously. The Butterfly spreads its wings as a spectacular pendant/brooch that undergoes a metamorphosis, separating into a complete suite of jewelry that includes a ring, earrings and pendant. While each piece in these collections may at first glance appear simplistic, it actually has an ingenious element of surprise built into its design.
This passion for engineering an added dimension into beautiful jewelry comes from spending many of her formative years studying technology and business. While Lata was born into jewelry with a family legacy stretching five generations as the appointed jewelers to the royal family of Sind, India, she originally chose not to pursue a career in this field. Instead, she opted for less artistic pursuits until a project brought her inside a prestigious jewelry house. She soon realized that jewelry design, especially if done her way, would be far more satisfying to her soul. So she set out on her own rather than taking a position with the family business, studying at the Gemological Institute of America, the Fashion Institute of Technology and both the University of Pennsylvania and New York University. Lata was honored as a Rising Star at her industry debut at the 2004 JCK Show and she has been regularly delighting fans and collectors with new surprises ever since."
